TORONTO – Insulin. The artificial pacemaker. Pablum baby food. These revolutionary advancements in medical science all trace their origins to Ontario and are part of a long history of discoveries and inventions that have improved health care.

Discovery is at the heart of the Doors Open Ontario program. This year, the Ontario Heritage Trust invites visitors to discover the many medical science and innovation sites showcased during Doors Open Ontario 2016.

Doors Open Ontario enables visitors to get behind normally closed doors to experience intriguing interiors and to learn more about the places where history was created.

“Many people know about Banting and Best discovering insulin, but they may be less aware of the many other medical science innovations that have their roots in Ontario,” said Dawson Bridger, Community Programs Officer for the Ontario Heritage Trust. “Our province has made tremendous contributions to health care and we are delighted that Doors Open Ontario will provide opportunities to experience real-life places and artifacts to illustrate this facsincating story.”

Featured sites for the 2016 medical science and innovation theme include hospitals, medical schools and laboratories that highlight Ontario’s and Canada’s achievements. Many of the participating sites offer special activities, such as tours, exhibitions and demonstrations – all free of charge.

Examples of what is being offered through Doors Open Ontario 2016 include:

· June 18 – Museum of Health Care at Kingston, a residence for student nurses from 1904 to 1969, now home to an extensive collection of artifacts telling the history of health care in Canada.

· June 25 – Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site in Gravenhurst, the birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune, provides an opportunity to delve into the remarkable achievements of this illustrious Canadian doctor.
