NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. — The images of Canadian cottages are near iconic — a crystal lake sparkling in the sunlight, kids jumping off the dock, casting a fishing line from the boat, sitting around a campfire roasting marshmallows for s’mores.

Unfortunately, too many see cottage ownership as something that is out of their reach, beyond their working class budget. The reality is that is not necessarily the case. While it’s true that a traditional cottage brings with it associated costs on top of the regular mortgage payment — plus all the maintenance.

“A six-figure purchase price, property taxes, utilities, furnishing, upkeep, renovations … it’s easy to see why some people can be financially intimidated at the prospect of buying a cottage,” says Chris Chew from Great Blue Resorts. “But it doesn’t have to be that way. Selecting a recreational cottage gives you all the amenities of a traditional cottage — and then some — at only a fraction of the cost and worry.”

The main difference between a traditional cottage and a recreational cottage is that a recreational cottage owner doesn’t own the land on which their cottage sits, which drastically reduces the purchase price to as low as $49,500. They are also typically located within a cottage community with shared amenities that include swimming pools, splash pads, canoes, kayaks and pontoon boats, multi-sports courts and activities for kids.

And similar to a condominium community, recreational cottages are maintenance free, with no yard work, and come fully furnished for an all-inclusive price.

“Recreational cottages really are the true cottage life for less,” says Chew. “Families come together in our communities. Kids meet other kids, parents meet other parents in a safe and orderly environment.

“Quite simply, whether you are talking finances, quality family time, enjoying the outdoors or meeting new people, it makes sense to purchase a recreational cottage.”

Great Blue Resorts owns and operates eight recreational cottage communities across Ontario, each offering swimming and boating, splash pads, sport courts and equipment, a Kidz Klub, secure grounds and unlimited gust passes for your friends to visit.
