Antigua and Barbuda's Tourism Product Attracts Regional Visitors

The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority welcomed a new group of regional cricket fans to Antigua for West Indies Cricket

March 8, 2017 (St. John’s, Antigua) - The Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority has put in place a strategic regional marketing plan to achieve higher visitor numbers from the neighbouring Caribbean islands.

Regional Marketing Consultant to the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), Charmaine Spencer said, “Coming off such a good year in 2016 for regional arrivals, this year the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority’s goal is to directly engage in more regional collaborations, and to encourage even more regional traffic to the destination, especially amongst the young professional millennials,” noted Spencer.

In recent promotions, Antigua and Barbuda’s ‘party style’ cricket and rich cricketing history was promoted, making Antigua and Barbuda the perfect destination to host and showcase the sport to the French Antillean market.

The promotion resulted in the French West Indies Cricket (FWIC) Association, a group of forty-four avid millennial travelers from Guadeloupe visiting Antigua and Barbuda from March 3 – March 5 during the West Indies vs England One Day Internationals.

The FWIC Association’s aim is to develop cricket in the French territories of the Caribbean area: Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Saint-Martin.

FWIC Group Coordinator Midji Verdol said, “Most of the persons in the group had never been to a cricket game. They were glad to discover this sport, and all the fever surrounding it. But what seduced them the most was the charm of Antigua and the very friendly hosts that received us.”

“This trip is a first step towards a rich collaboration between Guadeloupe and Antigua. Our guests really enjoyed their time in Antigua and have decided to share their experience with all their friends and family. No doubt this will bring new opportunities for the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority”, said Verdol.

Several media personnel from Guadeloupe including, Guadeloupe 1ere (France Television), Trace TV, and France-Antilles Newspaper also travelled with the group to capture the trip.

The Guadeloupe contingent enjoyed a series of activities over the two days. This included nightly entertainment, exploring Antigua on a catamaran tour, a visit to the historic Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the WICB cricket matches.

This initiative is one of the many regional tourism activities that the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism will be conducting this year.

Over the next few months the Tourism Authority will continue its direct promotions throughout the region to support the destination’s major events such as the 50th Anniversary of Antigua Sailing Week (April 29 – May 7 2017, www.sailingweek.com ) and the 60th Anniversary of Antigua’s Carnival, The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival (July 28 – August 8 2017).
