The head of football’s world governing body says CONCACAF deserves to have four countries guaranteed to reach the FIFA World Cup.

Joseph Sepp Blatter made his position known as he addressed football administrators from North America, Central America and the Caribbean in the Bahamas on Thursday (16 April).

“I am of the opinion – it is a personal opinion, but I think it is also your opinion – that CONCACAF should have, definitely should have and I underline ‘should have’, four starters,” he told the gathering, which responded with rousing applause.

The top three finishers in CONCACAF — the United States, Costa Rica and Honduras — qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Mexico, which finished fourth, had to enter a playoff against New Zealand, the top finisher in Oceania, in order to make it to the World Cup.

Mr. Blatter was speaking in his capacity as FIFA President but did so as he campaigned for another term. His challengers, who were also present, were not given a chance to address the meeting.
