Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May has called a surprise early general election for the UK, to take place on June 8th, 2017.

The announcement came as a surprise to many, as PM May has repeatedly rejected calls for an early general election for the UK.

So why the change of heart?

According to a statement made by Prime Minister May this morning outside of Downing Street, London, she has accused her political opponents of "political game-playing" and of seeking to undermine the country in the upcoming BREXIT talks.

The Prime Minister was very forthright in her statement in saying that Parliamentary divisions forced her change of heart towards an early election; her words being that the "only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election."

Accordingly, under the UK's Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, the next general election would have been taking place in 2020.

The deal is not yet set in stone for an early election however, as any early election will only take place after two-thirds of Parliamentarians in the UK's House of Commons vote for it. Parliament will be asked to vote for the election on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister's ruling Conservative Party is way ahead of the Opposition Labour Party in the latest opinion polls.
