The Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York has received a grant of $500,000 for two years to implement a program with the following objectives:

• Elevate CRC’s participation in international discussion regarding policy in Caribbean nations;
• Conduct hands on political, social and economic development work in the Caribbean and have both MEC students and faculty involved in the work to create opportunities to learn as well as lend expertise;
• Articulate the research and groundwork of the Center into curriculum that can be used to teach undergraduates at Medgar Evers College, providing them concrete and familiar points of access to social, political and economic global issues.
• Engage MEC students and faculty in ongoing development and social justice efforts in Caribbean countries.
• Permit students and faculty to co-author proposals, grants, and reports on development progress for publication.

The project is managed by an experienced international development team:

• The Project Director is Dr. J. A. George Irish, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts & Education, Professor of Caribbean and Latin American Studies and Executive Director of CRC since 1989;
• The Project Coordinator is Dr Waldaba H. Stewart, former NYS Senator, Adjunct Professor and international sustainable economic development expert of global renown y and especially in Central America;
• The Regional Education Coordinator is Milton Lawrence, MBA, with a wide range of professional experience at senior levels within the private, public and non-profit sectors, including extensive work with the Indigenous Banks of the Eastern Caribbean, the Secretariat of the African Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Caribbean Development Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The project is part of a wider agenda of the MEC President, Dr. Rudolph F. Crew’s Claiming Prosperity Revitalization Initiative for the future development and internationalization of the College.

Administrative support for the project will be provided by Shakima Scott, BA and Caeyenne Brown, BS. Negotiations for the grant were on the initiative of the President of Medgar Evers College.
