The German government is advising its citizens to stockpile food and water in case of a national emergency.

The advisory to citizens is that they must store food and water that would be able to last them a minimum of ten days.

This is the first time since the Cold War ended that any advisories of this kind have been issued.

This news comes after items from a German Interior Ministry document was revealed by a newspaper in Germany.

In the document it was pointed out that, "an attack on German territory, requiring conventional defence of the nation, is unlikely".

However, it went on to state in the document that "a major security threat to the nation in future could not be ruled out, so civil defence measures were necessary."

Opposition MPs have called this move "scaremongering."

Dietmar Bartsch, a party Parliamentary Head, said of the advisory; "you can completely unsettle people with yet another round of proposals, such as hoarding supplies".

The Interior Minister has remained on message stating that Germany must be prepared to react if water or food reserves were poisoned, or if oil and gas supplies were interrupted.

The new concept is set to go before Ministers on Wednesday
