Congratulations to Sharissa Ryan, Miss Montserrat 2014-2015, on capturing the prestigious pageant title, Miss Jaycees Queen 2015-16.

Some events can be considered symbolic, and I believe that your victory Sharissa, should be placed in that category. Your capture of this prestigious title after more than 53 failed attempts to bring home a win, is a testament to the resilience of most Montserratians.

Your stamina, charm, beauty and talent amongst your other fine qualities helped to propel you to pursue an ideal. Eventually, you have finally established a measurement for all Montserratians to use. I am taking “my hat off to you”, and your entire team members who have sponsored and supported you to achieve this national victory. As a well known saying goes “no man is an island” and I am sure you will agree.

Twenty years ago when our little island of Montserrat experienced a major disaster, the devastation of this volcanic disturbance eventually scattered many of our people. Your family however, was one who continued their love and linkages to our island. It is a a tribute to the unending patriotism that they did this, and held Montserrat in their hearts, as we may not have had you today representing us.

I would also go as far as to say that we are actually seeing the first indication of the statement used recently by our leaders of “bringing ash to cash”; a statement which in retrospect also encourages cooperation with what is happening on the island of Montserrat, and worldwide.

Sharissa Ryan, out of the ruins of this disaster you rise up. Rising like that of a Phoenix after 20 years. Congratulations to you for a job well done in representing Montserrat. All of the best to you as you go forward.
