The month-long Black History Celebration (BHC) program reaches the highpoint with its 24th annual Lecture at Philipsburg Jubilee Library, on Saturday, February 28, at 8 PM, said organizer Shujah Reiph.
Addressing the lecture theme, “Resisting Against the System,” will be keynote speaker Dorbrene O’Marde. The author, playwright and dynamic speaker, is also head of the Reparations Committee of Antigua and Barbuda. The 24th annual Black History Lecture is free to the general public.
Reiph has also been busy speaking throughout the island on Reparations, history, St. Martin’s culture, historical personalities, and related current affairs. “This is the busiest I’ve seen Shujah over the years for the Black History Celebration,” said Lasana M. Sekou of HNP, a BHC co-sponsoring organization, along with SOS Radio 95.9 FM.
“The way Shujah has pioneered this celebration of history on our island, means that he’s busy to no end, with his own program of activities, daily radio readings, research to keep the material fresh and interesting, and planning the lecture.”
“This year, in addition to his own packed program, Shujah had over 10 speaking engagements, all invitations to talk about history, from churches, schools, civic clubs, and community organizations in the North and South of St. Martin,” said Sekou.
The Paradise Inn, Dormoy Trucking Service, Artsen Service Center, Philipsburg Jubilee Library, Angel Insurance, Carl & Son Unique Bakery, GCEE, Paradise Tourism Tours, and Lazy Bay Parking, are co-sponsors of the BHC 2015 and what has become the island’s longest running lecture series.
Reiph is the president of Conscious Lyrics Foundation, organizer of the island-wide Black History Celebration program.
