When we see a painting hanging on the wall, we gaze at it in awe; captivated by its beauty, but we often overlook how that painting began—a blank canvas and an idea.

We often admire the lives of many famous actors, models and artists, wishing to be like them; that their lives were our own. But, what we see is the product of their journey; their lives being played out. Just like the beginning stages of a painting we are all writing our own destiny through our actions.

Challenges and obstacles accompany many great accomplishments. The journey to success for many famous individuals has often included adversities. A quotation by Malcolm X “There is no better than adversity every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.”

Before the artist embarked on his masterpiece, he had an idea in his mind. Similarly, if we are to achieve any kind of success in our personal lives, we must first know who we are, our purpose and our interests, where our strengths and our weaknesses lies and then decide on our goals.

We often exhaust ourselves trying to impress or satisfy others. However, knowing yourself gives you a clear picture of life and where you should concentrate your energy. Why do something because your friends are doing it or think it’s cool? Be yourself; be the real you.

A colloquial term frequently used, which would give a clearer picture, is: “If you stand for nothing, you would fall for anything.” On my daily walks I dabble in self search, as a man of many ideas these sessions usually allow me to unlock me. Knowing you would heavily impact the choices you make, the people you associate with and also act as a tool of self motivation, because having a true knowledge of yourself and being passionate about your goals will enable you to persevere through adversities.

When buying a car we usually research to get details, test drive and if it’s to our liking we purchase. However, we are less keen in the affairs of our lives. Something as invaluable as life is sometimes taken for granted. Below are questions that would help you to determine who you are. Answer honestly! If answered honestly this is a great leap in you getting to know yourself and taking action towards developing a stronger and more productive you.
