The Honourable Ian C.A. Douglas, Dominica's Minister of Tourism & Legal Affairs, spoke with the media recently regarding the island's tourism strategy. The Minister focused primarily at the significant impact tourism has on the economy of Dominica. Tourism, he stated, is the driver of the Dominican economy presently, not only via direct employment that is created, but also by offshoot industries that prosper due to the island's tourism product. Tourism contributes to about 7% of GDP according to Minister Douglas.

Minister Douglas further stated the importance of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) to the Nature Island. He also gave a very insightful overview of how initiatives such as community tourism are being integrated into the eco-tourism marketing strategy for Dominica, outlining how these initiatives have been working very well for the island with visitor numbers to the island towards the upside.
