Barabbas is an individual that I would describe as a larger than life figure! He is an entertainer; an educator and a fierce competitor! Both him and his group, He was taken part in the Junkanoo competition for many years and have been winners also for many years on the trot! This year is no different!
For the 2017 Junkanoo Carnival taking place here in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, Barabbas plans to compete with his company. He has already informed the media team who visited his family's establishment at Junkanoo World, that he will win based on the costume he has chosen to display during the parade. He predicts this costume will emerge as winner of the competition this weekend.
It is Junkanoo Carnival here in The Bahamas. Activities were previously held in Grand Bahama from April 28th-29th, 2017. Now it is the turn of Nassau, from May 4th-7th, 2017.
Both local Bahamian culture, along with other artistes from around the Caribbean will be taking part in this extravagant event that is now in its third year of production. The event kicked off here in Nassau on the evening of Thursday May 4th with local legends performing on the big stage. Names such as Veronica Bishop, Denise Belfon, Lady E, Fanshawn, High Energy Band, Nehemiah Hield, Voice and others performed.
Junkanoo is the heartbeat of The Bahamas! Its power lies in the mystery of beat; a resounding enchantment of drums, bells, cow skins, shack-shacks, tins and iron beating - that is topped off by effervescent costumes that are born from creative minds who tell stories in their designs that capture the true culture and spirit of the Bahamian people.
This celebration of Culture here in The Bahamas can be found fully expressed at Junkanoo World. Barabbas and his team do an amazing job in preserving the culture for the generations to come by teaching the youths, and even adults of the various facets of Junkanoo; from designing the costumes right through to the music that is played so uniquely.
At Junkanoo World, everything that is needed to construct the costumes with the beautiful adornments that are so attentively built in to each costume, can be found. From a tiny button to a huge feather display for a head dress; they all can be found at Junkanoo World.
Barabbas loves his work. The energy he exudes when he speaks of the work both him, his family, plus others who work with him do for Junkanoo - one can tell that to him this is not a job, or just a mere hobby. This is their life!
The wealth of The Bahamas is garnered from a crisply marketed tourism product. That product has captured the imagination of visitors the world over, who flock to these island to see what's in store.
