TORONTO – February 1, 2018 – Reading week is fast approaching for university and college students, and many are wondering how to make the most of their week off. Projects Abroad offers international volunteering opportunities for these students during their breaks in February and March, to travel to a different country and conduct service work that will uplift a community in a specific area of need.

Projects Abroad's Alternative Spring Break volunteer trips are offered to North American university students as an opportunity to travel while giving back. There are fourteen projects to choose from, and these vary between projects in child care, building, conservation, international development, medicine, and public health. Volunteers can choose a project based on the type of work they will be doing, or can make their decision based on a destination they have always wanted to visit. Some of Projects Abroad's reading week trips are based in Belize, Mexico, Peru, and Argentina.

"We have scheduled our reading week projects to coincide with most major university breaks," says Ashima Dhingra, Director for Canada at Projects Abroad. "The projects we run are also mostly in nearby countries, to avoid jet lag for the short time of only one week abroad."

Whether it be assisting with early childhood development in Belize, providing basic health care in disadvantaged communities in Peru, or protecting endangered sea turtles in Mexico, volunteers will conduct work that contributes to a long-term plan to bring upliftment and sustainable development in communities faced with challenging circumstances.

Not only will volunteers provide much needed assistance to the teams running ongoing projects, they will also benefit from an eye-opening cultural experience. By immersing in a different country's cultures and taking part in daily life, like enjoying local foods, living with host families, and observing natural beauty, volunteers will see themselves mature and grow and expand their horizons to become more informed global citizens.

With reading week fast approaching at most Canadian universities and colleges, Projects Abroad encourages all who are interested to volunteer abroad to begin their application processes sooner than later. This will ensure a place on a desired project, for a reading week never to forget.
