The First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, near San Antonio, Texas, USA, today became a scene of carnage as a gunman dressed in full military gear is reported to have opened fire, killing 27 people and injuring 30 more.

According to reports from The Wilson County News outlet, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackett informed the media that the shooter is now dead.

A CNN reported stated that the shooter was killed after a brief chase into the neighbouring Guadalupe County.

The mass shooting at First Baptist Church is the second such type of shooting in the U.S, following on from last month's deadly Las Vegas shooting at a concert, where Stephen Paddock shot and killed 58 people from the window of his hotel room.

Sutherland Springs, the location of this latest incident is reported to be a small community about 48km (30 miles) south east of San Antonio, Texas.

A MSNBC report quotes Carrie Matula, a worker at a nearby gas station about 150 yards away from the church, saying she heard “semiautomatic gunfire.”

She went on to mention; “I never thought it would happen here. This is something that happens in a big city. I would never have thought this would have taken place here. It’s just too tight a community. It doesn’t make sense.”
