BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (1 April 2016) - The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)’s scholarship programme has set a 29 April deadline for the receipt of applications from persons seeking scholarships and grants to pursue tourism studies at the college and tertiary levels.

The CTO Foundation will this year offer support in four categories, including the commemorative Arley Sobers and Audrey Palmer Hawks scholarships, named after outstanding past senior leaders of the organization.

Scholarships of up to US$12,000 are being offered to Caribbean nationals wishing to study tourism or hospitality at the post graduate level, while study grants of up to US$2,500 are offer to those pursing tourism/hospitality studies at the certificate, diploma, associate degree or first degree level, and to industry personnel who want to gain proficiency in a second language.

In addition, a scholarship of up to US$2,500 is being offered in the name of CTO’s former director of research and information management Arley Sobers for persons working in local tourism organizations who wish to strengthen their skills in the areas of research and statistics.

One of the awardees will be offered a study grant or scholarship in the name of the late Audrey Palmer Hawks who was the past director general of the Caribbean Tourism Association based in New York, which, in 1989, merged with the Caribbean Tourism Research and Development Centre based in Barbados to form the CTO.

Since 1998 the CTO Foundation has provided over 100 major scholarships and more than 140 study grants to deserving Caribbean nationals, amounting to just under US$1 million. Major Foundation sponsors include American Express, American Airlines, Interval International, the CTO chapters worldwide and numerous allied members.
