Montserrat is moving closer towards having reliable electricity delivered to the electricity grid, from the EC$36 million new power generating plant that is being built in the Shinland area in the north of the island.

The project is being handled by the Ministry of Communications, Works, Labour, & Energy under the leadership of Honourable Minister Paul Lewis.

Funding for the project came from several different sources with the Department for International Development (DFID) having provided EC$22.4 million for the project. EC$6.7 million EC dollars came from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) via a soft loan. A further EC$1 million was also given in grants from the CDB.

Other contributions towards the project also came from Montserrat Utilities Limited (MUL) and the Government of Montserrat (GoM) with the provision of land and local resources to the project totalling EC$6 Million.

Project Manager for the power plant project, Dion Weekes, explained that "first fire" for the new diesel engine will take place from October, 2016 lasting one month. Then power generation into the grid to begin in November, 2016. {module_webapps id="41638" filter="item" itemId="13427158"}
