The Institute of Caribbean Studies, in partnership with the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Caribbean Community Affairs, will be presenting, "My Immigrant Story: A Workshop in Memoir Writing" as part of its Bookish 2016 literary series on July 23rd in Washington, DC. This one-day workshop is designed to help participants excavate memories and write a personal narrative about their immigrant story. Participants will learn about organizing their writing time; identifying and developing interesting characters from their lives; writing the hook - determining where their stories should begin; and the basics of self-publishing. Participants will examine the works of memoir writers and devote time to independent writing.

Beverley East and Dionne Peart are both published Caribbean authors based in D.C. Beverley East is the bestselling author of Finding Mr. Write - A New Slant on Selecting the Perfect Mate; Reaper of Souls, a novel based on the 1957 Kendal Crash; and Bat Mitzvah Girl - Memories of a Jamaican Child. Ebony magazine regarded her as one of the "Six Caribbean authors to recognize in 2014." Dionne Peart is the author of the novels Somerset Grove, a BET.com "You Gotta Have It" pick in 2015,and Butterfly. Her work has also been featured in Akashic Books' Duppy Thursday series.

"My Immigrant Story: A Workshop in Memoir Writing" will take on July 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Writer's Lounge in D.C. The cost is free, but the deadline to register is July 20th. Early registration is advised as space is limited!
