Nevada joins the Caribbean American Heritage Month Movement with a Launch on May 18th to kick off a month long series of activities.

Coming on the heels of a successful 'Taste of the Caribbean', held on April 22nd, and organized by Las Vegas Latin Caribbean Festival, to which ICS Program Board Member Jerry Castro-Cayetano is an Advisor, the Caribbean community and Friends of the Caribbean in Las Vegas will launch the Caribbean presence in Nevada with no uncertainty.

Planned activities include:

June 1st, 2017 - Congressman Ruben Kihuen's Office celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month
June 3rd, 2017 - Las Vegas Caribbean-American Heritage Month Film & Arts Festival
June 10th, 2017 - Caribbean-American Heritage Month Health fair - AWAITING CONFIRMATION
June 17th - How to become a citizen workshop
June 23rd - June 30th: Las Vegas Latin & Caribbean Restaurant Week

Castro-Cayetano, who is of Garifuna heritage, stated "Since discovering and getting involved in Caribbean American Heritage Month some 6 years ago, I have been looking for a way to bridge my Garifuna Caribbean heritage with my Latin upbringing in Guatemala. I have not had a place to belong. Celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month allows me to display the rich heritage and culture of the Caribbean Garifuna people and show our connections to Latin America."

Jerry, who is is no stranger to organizing, has been active in outreach to Caribbean people in the midwest and west while working as a labor union outreach coordinator, and serves as a member of ICS Program Board for Outreach and Communications. The Las Vegas Latin Caribbean Festival Inc., founded by Trinidadian community advocate Leonie Blackshire is responsible for the Las Vegas Caribbean Carnival held on Halloween weekend.
