It is with regret that we announce the death of Dr. James Alfred George Irish. Dr. Irish, formerly of Baker Hill and Fort Barrington in Montserrat, resided in Bronx, York at the time of his passing.

Dr. J. A. George Irish was the composer of the musical score of the Montserrat National Song “Motherland”, Recipient of the Order of Excellence, the author of 32 books, founder and Musical Director of the Montserrat Emerald Community Singers, founder of Leeward Islands Debating Competition, founder of the Montserrat Allied Workers Union. Additionally, during his distinguished career, Dr. Irish served as Chair of the Spanish Department at the UWI (Mona), Executive Director of the Caribbean Research Center, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, President of the Caribbean Diaspora Press Inc. and the Caribbean American Foundation.  

Dr. George Irish, passed at age of 76 on February 12, 2019. He leaves to mourn:

  • his wife: Joy Irish,

  • his children: Ken, Ayanna, Jaja [pronounced Jah-Ha], Gershom, Adelle, and Johnathon

  • his grandchildren: Kenia [pronounced: Kenya], Kenese [pronounced: Ken-eese], Aaron, Ariadne, Alexandre and Gracie,

  • his sister: Marsha (Alice),

  • his brothers: Ivon, Fred and Glen,

  • his nieces and nephews: Valerie, Beverley, Vivienne, Kealan, Iesha, Johan [pronounced: Yo-han], Tony,

  • his Uncle: Dennis

  • his Step-Father: Fred   

  • cousins: Ruth, Olga, Sylvia, Leah, Iona and siblings, the Sweeneys, Geralds and Weekes

  • extended family members, countless friends, colleagues and former students.

Individuals and organizations wishing to submit written tributes to be included in the program are asked to submit them to Mrs. Vera Weekes @ Veraweekes@gmail.com no later than Friday, February 22nd , 2019.

The final celebrations of the life of Dr. J.A. George Irish will be held as follows:
