Ontario Heritage Trust Shares Must-see Sites for Families

TORONTO, ON (May, 2016) – Finding family-friendly activities to do on the weekends — that won't break the bank — can be a difficult task for parents.

"Kids have tons of energy and are always eager to explore and try new things," says Kimberly Murphy of the Ontario Heritage Trust. "Doors Open Ontario is the perfect opportunity for families to experience different activities in their communities that are not usually available to the public free of charge."

Doors Open Ontario, a province wide program of the Ontario Heritage Trust, runs from April to October. Heritage sites across the province open their doors to the public, free of charge, so Ontario residents and visitors can explore these unique and charming heritage sites.

With families in mind, the Trust created a list of their must-see kid (and family) friendly sites during Doors Open Ontario 2016.

Eyer-Wideman Homestead and Ropes Challenge Course – Richmond Hill (May 14)
This designated building is used as the local youth centre, featuring an outdoor high- and low-ropes challenge course and a climbing wall. Enjoy craft activities and refreshments.

Downsview Park Sports Centre – True North Climbing – Toronto (May 28-29)
Formerly an aircraft hangar for the de Havilland Aircraft Company and the Canadian Forces, this 45,058-square-metre (485,000-square-foot) multipurpose facility now attracts visitors of all ages and interests to activities year-round. During Doors Open Toronto, True North Climbing will offer one free climb to all visitors.

Richmond Hill Live Steamers – Whitchurch-Stouffville (June 4)
This group of hobbyists and engineers has a wonderful collection of privately owned miniature trains, replicas of real engines dating back to the 1820s. Take a ride on one of the miniature railways (for adults and children) – there are three sizes to choose from! Learn about how railways operated in days gone by.

Treetop Trekking and Treetop Village – Whitchurch-Stouffville (June 4)
Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the adventure park at Bruce's Mill. Treewalk Village is a new adventure park designed just for kids. Take a 20-minute tour and explore the park. Then, head to the zip line and aerial game park to see how these adventure courses are built. Zip line/aerial game treks are available if arranged in advance by telephone.

Museum of Health Care at Kingston – Kingston (June 18)
A historical re-enactment, the Children’s Gallery craft area and behind-the-scenes tours of the collection storage areas combine to tell the history of health care in Canada.
