Poem: Daddy Needs To Know

Poem: Daddy Needs To Know

Adults separated amicably
Raindrops on dasheen bush, children don’t see
Tears and raucous are done far away
Children notice that no longer does Daddy come to play
The house engine lost a cog
Rapid adjustment sometimes it bogs
Curious kids feel life’s descent at its low
Mommy where did Daddy go?

Years pass this new man got introduced
Erratically taking on Daddy’s duties; I’m confused
Rebellious feelings creep through my mind
Estrogen body developing; he’s watching my behind
He touched me where he shouldn’t
I know better
I complained but Mom you said t’was a jester
Buying me gifts you do not know
Mommy why did Daddy go?

Came home from school early today
Another man exiting your bedroom that’s not okay
Is this a daily activity or an occurrence?
Are you using these men for revenge or vengeance?
Instead of unleashing your ire for molestation
Asking me to acquiesce to the humiliation
Many children suffering on the down low
Mommy, tell me mommy, why did Daddy go?
