South Africa's 75-year-old President, Jacob Zuma, today announced his resignation with immediate effect, via a televised broadcast to the nation.

Zuma has been in power since 2009, however, his time in office has been hit by scandal and allegations of corruption.

During his television address Zuma stated: "I have served the people of South Africa to the best of my ability."

His resignation comes amid his disagreement with the way the ANC has treated him, as he contends that he disagrees with the instruction of the African National Congress party for him to leave office immediately.

Mr Zuma's resignation now gives way to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC's new leader.

A vote of no confidence was being prepared against Mr Zuma which would have been tabled in the South African parliament on Thursday, February 15th.
