To liaise directly with crop and livestock farmers in an effort to disseminate relevant information. To gather information which would facilitate planning and management in the Department of Agriculture.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Giving technical advice to farmers covering agronomy, livestock husbandry, and business planning.
Collecting information patterns of agricultural production and liaise with Database Officer on storage, dissemination and utilization of information.
Disseminating information relating to choice of crops and markets to farmers and to promote Good Agricultural Practices.
Assembling and coordinating task forces to tackle specific issues/problems relating to farmers, using resources from within and outside the Department.
Identifying, developing and implementing projects utilizing first hand knowledge of farmers (constraints and opportunities) in conjunction with Principal Agricultural Officer.
Maintaining ownership of projects initiated and contribute as appropriate.
Assess the training needs of farmers, designing and co-ordinating and delivery of programmes with appropriate involvement.
Designing and implementing farm demonstrations and facilitate technology transfer to compliment farmers training.
Providing plant quarantine control at the Airport and Seaport by developing systems to have effective surveillance, detection and prevention of entry of plant pests and diseases.
Preferably have a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture (Agronomy, Soil Science, Extension Education Services, Plant Pathology etc.)
have a Tertiary-level Diploma in Agriculture or Associate Degree in Agriculture with at least five (5) years working in an agriculture environment with exposure to crop and livestock production;
Have experience in the area of Agricultural Extension and Education services;
Have a sound background in Crop Cultivation, Soil Conservation, Pasture Agronomy;
Have experience working as a Phyto-sanitary Officer would be an asset
Have good interpersonal and communication skills;
Be self-motivated with ability to organise work programmes.
Be able to initiate projects with the capacity to recognise needed inputs.
Terms of Appointment
Appointment will be made on a permanent or contractual basis.
The position is graded at R22-16, that is, EC$50,976 - $60,480 per annum – taxable.
