Market on the Lawns In Jamaica

handmade bagsIt was a good day for early Christmas shopping so families were out and about at Devon House for ‘Market on the Lawn’ on Sunday November 27, 2011. Bargains galore along with music and edible treats kept people coming even up to closing time to see what all the talk was about.

A lot of jewellery was on show and the first stop for most patrons seemed to be at Mirabel’s booth and it became obvious why very quickly. The prices were super affordable. Rings, earrings, bracelets and everything to bling you out were available for as low as $350 so pieces were flying off the table in quick succession.

Nearby was a new outlet dubbed ‘The Wardrobe’ that featured UK made, male and female clothing for those seeing something a little bit different while ‘Hart in Irits’ had gorgeous leather bags that were custom made pieces that stood out for its intricate stitching and bold colours.

Una McPherson brought out a huge collection of paintings and wood craft which were one of a kind and got a lot of visitors to her stall. The main attraction there were the cheese trays made of wood and shaped like a piano, a guitar and even a wedge of cheese.

The children present had a good time enjoying the modern day twist of snow cones called ‘sno- ice’ while for the adults there was ‘Bragadaps’ and their sorrel treats which seem to be Jamaica’s answer to raisins. Their new banana-almond bread was also a huge hit with foodies.

For the naturally curvaceous women, there was lingerie as Peaches N’ Cream brought out bows, bells, whistles and lots of lace for women who wanted to spice up their bedrooms. In sizes ranging from 34A to 40DD, the barely there pieces were sure attention grabbers.

Fine artist Peter Peart, in addition to having his art work displayed, had wall socket coverings that were painted plus his newest creation, miniature fridge magnets that were also pretty painted works of art that were water proof and great gift items. Another creative booth was ‘Calabash Creations’ with gourda wall hangings with cravings of turtles, dolphins, birds and elephants that were cute and great for decorating small areas in your homes.
