2019 Calypso Finals Tonight on Montserrat: Will it Be an Epic Night?

On Sunday evening, December 29th, the man with the golden voice, Garnet "Sylk" Thompson, will take to the stage in Little Bay, inside the Carnival Village, to defend his Calypso Monarch Title.

Sylk will be coming up against 9 other calypsonians who have given of their effort and talent to make it through to face him in the finals. Will he emerge victorious once again?  The prize allocation is as follows:


King: $15,000.00

1st Runner Up: $10,000.00

2nd Runner Up: $7,000.00

3rd Runner Up: $5,500.00

4th Runner Up :$4,000.00

5th Runner Up: $3,500.00

6th Runner Up: $3,000.00

7th Runner Up: $2,500.00

8th Runner Up: $2,000.00

9th Runner Up: $1,000.00


The Montserrat Arts council (MAC) have also announced some further EC$6,500 worth of special prizes, which are as follows:


Crowd Favourite: $250.00

Radio March: $250.00

Best Newcomer: $500.00

Most Creative: $1,000.00

Most Improved: $1,000.00

Best Social Commentary: $1,000.00

Environmental Song: $1,000.00

Road March: $1,000.00

Best Political Song: $500.00


The Order of performances for the Calypsonians will be as follows: 


The show kicks of at 8:00pm with Cepeke's BLACK RHYTHMS BAND backing the Calypsonians. The host for the show will be ZJB's Morning man, Mr Basil Chambers.

Many calypso lovers are looking forward to what they are hoping will be a night of fierce competition between all the finalists. Calypso has traditionally always evoked many passionate debates on island with regards to the quality of the songs - the melodies, the composers and the delivery of these songs on the night of the finals. It is expected that tonight's show will produce more of that type of banter. See below an indication of what the judges will be looking for tonight:
