Jamaicans residing in the southern US state of Georgia will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of their homeland's independence with a year-long series of activities.

The activities will kick off with a launching ceremony at the Atlanta City Hall at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012. During that ceremony, Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey P. Marks, will officially launch the activities.

Atlanta Mayor Kassim Reed, Former Atlanta Mayor and US Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, members of Congress, state representatives, members of the consular corps, the business community, other elected officials and a wide cross-section of the Jamaican and the Caribbean communities in Georgia are expected to attend the event.

The activities are being planned by the Jamaica 50th - Atlanta Planning Committee under the patronage of the Jamaican Honorary Consul to Georgia, Mr. Vin Martin.

According to Mr. Martin, the events are being planned under the national theme "Feel the Heart and Soul of a Nation." Atlanta has a large Jamaican population, he said, "and it is our goal to present a well-rounded, entertaining and culturally pleasing round of events that everyone can participate in and celebrate with us our wonderful homeland that has given us so much and still means a lot to us here in the United States." The Committee, with the blessing of the Ambassador, is encouraging all organizations and businesses to participate fully to ensure that the activities are well executed.

Among the year-long Jamaica independence activities being planned for Georgia are the staging of a play, a national sports day, performance by the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, a family fun day, thanksgiving church service, a flag raising ceremony, an independence ball, a jerk festival, ceremony to salute the island's national heroes, and a fashion show to celebrate 50 years of Jamaican culture.

A website newly created to provide information on all the independence activities will also be launched on January 22, 2012.
