Coming off the broadcasts of the first exclusive interview granted by President Trump to a Spanish-language network and the first presidential Democratic debate of the cycle, Telemundo network dives into Decision 2020 elections coverage with the release of Noticias Telemundo’s “State of the Latino Vote Poll – One Year Out,” a comprehensive survey of 1,000 Hispanic registered voters nationwide.

“The 2020 elections kicked off on Noticias Telemundo with Trump’s exclusive interview and the first presidential debate,” said Patsy Loris, Senior Vice President for Elections 2020 and Special Projects. “Our main objective commissioning this poll exactly one year out is to prove to our community that Noticias Telemundo is committed to highlighting the needs of Latinos in the United States, to show that our vote is up for grabs and, most importantly, to empower them with the information they need to decide which candidate best represents them.”

The poll, produced in partnership with Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, measures vote intention and sentiment on multiple issues, shedding light on the current perceptions of the largest minority ethnic group to vote in 2020. Main findings include:

Electoral trends:

  • 64% of Hispanic registered voters would replace President Trump with a Democratic candidate.
  • 50% either don’t think anyone can beat Trump (18%) or are not sure which Democratic candidate could (32%).
  • Biden is considered the candidate with the best chance of beating Trump (28%) followed by Sanders (12%) and Warren (10%).
  • Healthcare (29%) is the issue that most influences Latinos to choose a candidate, followed by the Economy and Jobs (24%) and Immigration (14%).
  • 65% disapprove of the Trump administration’s handling of immigration policy.

President Trump:

  • 57% of Hispanic registered voters support impeaching Trump and removing him from office.
  • 64% disapprove of Trump’s performance as president.
  • 70% agree that Trump’s rhetoric has encouraged anti-immigrant sentiment, racism, and/or discrimination in the US.

Issues:

  • 72% of registered Latino voters are worried about becoming the victim of a hate crime like El Paso’s.
  • 82% are worried about foreign government intervention in the 2020 elections, including a majority (57%) of Surveyed Republicans.
  • 65% feel that Hispanics are being widely persecuted/discriminated against.

Since moving to Telemundo Center in April 2018, Noticias Telemundo has undergone an expansion process to prepare for its Decision 2020 elections coverage, including the launch of its award-winning studio and the incorporation of 10 journalists to its team, the last quarter of 2020, including three former New York Times en Español journalists.
