Leading Civil Rights Groups Urge House to Pass Bill to End Muslim and African Ban

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, major civil rights groups are calling on members of Congress to pass the NO BAN Act (HR 2486), a bill to end the Trump administration’s Muslim and African Ban and enact safeguards preventing future, similar bans. On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives will hold a historic vote on the NO BAN Act. The following is a joint statement from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., the National Action Network, the NAACP, the Lawyers’ Committee For Civil Rights Under Law, Color of Change, the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) and Muslim Advocates:

“Under the Muslim and African Ban more than a quarter of Africans are banned from immigrating to America, leaving millions of American families cut off from their loved ones. During a time of major hardship and loss for Black people across America, there is an urgent need to restore these family ties.  

The Muslim and African Ban is another attack on the rights, the dignity and the identity of Black communities. As the expanded Muslim Ban includes people from Nigeria, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Libya - even more Black families are needlessly suffering from a policy with no legitimate justification.

We call on members of Congress to vote in favor of the NO BAN Act to end this ban and discrimination in our immigration system."
