When C-O-N-T-A-C-T – the revolutionary immersive performance that played to sold-out audiences in Europe – comes to Toronto in April, it will have a unique, made-in-Canada innovation.
Recognizing the city’s diversity, the show will be available simultaneously in up to nine languages. The audience will hear the show in 3D sound, tapping into the soundscape through headphones and a mobile app as they follow the actors through the downtown streets of Toronto.
C-O-N-T-A-C-T takes place entirely outdoors allowing for a unique and safe setting for guests.
The Toronto show will be available in English, French, Italian and Spanish to start, with Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Hindi, and Tagalog to follow.
This is made possible by C-O-N-T-A-C-T’s mobile technology, a downloadable app that syncs the audio – in the preferred language of the individual theatre-goer – with the action of the performance. The actors themselves don’t speak, with the audio creating a sense that the audience is hearing their thoughts.
Typically, when there are multiple language versions of a show they are each in separate performances. With C-O-N-T-A-C-T everyone is able to participate together at the same time.
During the outdoor performances, audiences – wearing masks and limited to 7 per show to maintain social distancing – follow the performers along the street.
