There are plenty of directories on the Internet—each filled with a bounty of business names and addresses. And while you may consider these sites to be a dime a dozen, they have the power to affect your Internet ranking.

Google—you've heard of that little tech startup, right?—likes to offer quality information to searchers. So if your business is listed on multiple directories (and it is), but the information doesn't match Google's Knowledge Vault (an algorithm designed to rank websites on accuracy, not popularity), your organic search ranking will drop.

Do a little recon to make sure there isn't a wily typo or an incorrect phone number lurking in the shadows that's taking your search ranking down a few notches. Consistency in your citations (mentions of your business name, address and phone number) are one sure way to look good in Google's eyes—and as far as we can tell, that's what everyone is after.
