These non-traditional employment opportunities were secured following a recent visit to Canada by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Derrick Kellier. The minister visited existing and prospective employers in the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia to explore job opportunities for Jamaican workers and the training and certification required for the Canadian labour market.

The labour minister held discussions with Canadian Federal and Provincial Govern-ment officials on matters relating to immigration, training and enterprise development.

The delegation also met with prospective employers in tourism/hospitality, automotive industry, agriculture and healthcare, as well as key personnel at the provincial trades and licensing authorities and the management of prominent training institutions in Canada.

The Ministry is seeking to forge links with key Canadian training institutions and provincial apprenticeship training authorities to facilitate training and employment in several trades. The Ministry is also looking to secure significant labour mobility agreements with the authorities in these four Provinces.
