NEW YORK, NY (1 Oct. 2019) – A Birmingham, UK-based publication is throwing its support behind the CTO Scholarship Foundation in an initiative aided by two Caribbean resorts.

The Phoenix newspaper has selected the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) as its exclusive partner for its 9th annual anniversary awards gala on 16 Nov. 2019. The gala will serve as a fundraiser for the CTO Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)3 approved charity in the United States that offers scholarships and grants to Caribbean nationals pursuing studies in tourism and related subjects.

“In keeping with our ethos of community cohesion, our commitment to helping the youth realise their aspirations, and our association with CTO this year, we will play a part in helping to provide opportunities to the next generation by raising funds for the CTO Scholarship Foundation,” said Marcia McLaughlin, the publisher and CEO of The Phoenix.

The CTO has worked with The Phoenix in the past, having provided speakers for the gala awards in the last three years. This year the paper invited the organisation to be a partner by lending its name to the event to help attract funds for the foundation.

In a show of support for the CTO’s programme to inspire the next generation of tourism leaders in the region, two Caribbean resorts - the adults-only, all-inclusive Warwick Paradise Island – Bahamas and Mango Bay in Barbados – are both contributing five-night all-inclusive holidays to the fundraiser.

“We are grateful to The Phoenix for offering to help raise funds for the CTO Scholarship Foundation as part of its awards gala programme this year,” said Jacqueline Johnson, CTC, chairperson of the CTO Scholarship Foundation and president of Global Bridal Group. “We are grateful to both Warwick Paradise Island – Bahamas and Mango Bay, Barbados for generously providing stays at their respective resorts so we can auction off the getaways to benefit the foundation. We rely on partners such as these to expand the financial ability of the foundation to provide the grants and scholarships.”

The CTO Scholarship Foundation has the expressed aim of training and developing future leaders for the Caribbean tourism industry by funding studies in tourism and tourism-related subjects, hospitality and language. Since its inception, the foundation has provided over 280 grants and scholarships worth over US$1 million to Caribbean nationals pursuing further studies. The money spent thus far has been raised from various fundraising efforts and through the very generous support of a few major corporations.

The foundation is managed by a board of directors, comprising private and public sector individuals, who volunteer their time and talent to support and guide its efforts.

Individuals who wish to make a contribution to the CTO Scholarship Foundation can do so via its GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/cto-scholarship-foundationCorporations interested in participating with the programme should contact Sylma Brown at CTO directly: Tel: (212) 635-9530; E-mail: CTOny@caribtourism.com.
